Train Like a Dog to Look Like a God -Penthesilea
Train Like a Dog to Look Like a God – the dyslexic trainers manual to add lean tissue and reduce body fat!
This Train Like a Dog to Look Like a God Blog is focusing on Weight Training for Women and is named after Penthesilea- the Amazon Warrior Queen.
Penthesilea
According to some ancient Mythology, Penthesilea was the daughter of Ares. She was a beautiful and skilled warrior who fought as valiantly as any Greek hero, and indeed she proved her prowess on the battlefield on many occasions.
Women and Weight Lifting
Typically the most common question I get when starting female clients on some form of resistance training program is:
“I won’t get to much muscle and become bulky?”
My typical answer is take a look at the guys training, pushing as much weight as possible trying to build muscle, they have been training 4-5 days a week for the last I don’t know how many years eating 3 to 4 times the amount of calories you are eating and have about 10 to 30 time the amount of hormones needed to cause hypertrophy, he still doesn’t even look as muscly as the image you have in your head. Now if you start the resistance training program and you do start looking like that, I am going to question what supplements you are taking because it just isn’t going to happen!
You will start to ‘tone’ up- this is a combination of muscle and reducing body fat, you will notice if you feel you are developing muscles in areas and if this starts to be more than you want it is quite easy to take that exercise out or change it up. You will not wake up one morning with arms like Arnold it is a process and you can monitor it.
So you want to burn Calories because thats how you know how well your doing right? On the treadmill it tells you you’ve done 500 calories today, well done thats great but its not accurate. First time possibly you did burn 500 calories but next time and the time after that your calorie expediter will be less, the human body adapts quickly and becomes more efficient so each time your going to burn less and less. Also once you jump off that treadmill after some steady state cardio you pretty much stop burning calories.
Now, why should you lift weights?
- You will add muscle- the more muscle your body has the more calories you will burn at rest.
- You will add muscle- you want that curvy body, glutes, ‘toned’ arms, this is muscle I’m afraid.
- you will add muscle- you will reduce the risk of injury, arthritis and back pain.
What should you do now?
Find a trainer or coach who will teach you the various lifts safely. Lifts I would recommend to have in your programming are Squats, Deadlifts, Chest Press, Shoulder Press, Dumbbell Rows, Leg Press, Hamstring Curl, Reverse Hyper, and Lat Pull Down. – these do not have to be in one program they can be spread over 2 or 3 sessions in the week.
Now I am not saying cardio is rubbish because there is a time and place for it but if you want to get ‘toned’ start lifting ladies!
